1) WTF?
Verity is a harsh noise wall (HNW) project singularly devoted to the classic episodes of the BBC television series
Doctor Who, as aired from 1963-1989.
2) Where does the name come from?
Verity is named after
Verity Lambert, the original producer for Doctor Who when it was created in 1963. She continued in this role until 1965. She left the BBC in 1969 to work for Thames Television and Euston Films, and eventually founded her own production company. She passed away in 2007. (On this page's current background, she's pictured directly in the middle, in between the original cast members of Doctor Who, (l-r) Carole Ann Ford, Jacqueline Hill, William Russell, and William Hartnell.)
3) What's
the master plan?
Verity will release individual records devoted to each individual serial of classic Doctor Who.
4) That's 158 releases!
Actually 159, but minus a few - see below. At the optimistic rate of one release a month, this will take over thirteen years.
5) On what format will these be released?
Multiple formats. Plans are definite for cassette, CD-R, and DVD-R. Vinyl's a good possibility.
6) DVD-R?
Yes, there are plans for video.
7) On what label(s) will these be released?
Gabriel Chase, which will be the house label for Verity and only Verity (although there's always the possibility of collaborations with other projects). Catalogue identification will be in the format "GC:x", with "x" being the production code for the serial, starting with "GC:A" for "An Unearthly Child" and ending in "GC:7Q" for "Ghost Light". There might be records released in conjunction with other labels, but Gabriel Chase will always have some part in the release.
7a) Where does the name "Gabriel Chase" come from?
Gabriel Chase is the name of a house in "Ghost Light", the last classic Doctor Who story produced (but not last transmitted). It's a nice bookend with "Verity".
8) Will releases be in order of episode transmission?
No, they'll be ordered by whim, with the exception that the first release will be "An Unearthly Chikl" after the first serial and the final release will be "Survival" (7P) after the last story.
9) How will
"The Trial of a Time Lord" be handled?
"The Trial of a Time Lord", a serial consisting of the stories "The Mysterious Planet", "Mindwarp", "Terror of the Vervoids", and "The Ultimate Foe" (production codes 7A through 7C) will be released as a box set. Season 16 with its season-long arc, colloquialized as "The Key to Time", may also be released as a box set, or they may be released individually with the alternate option of a box set. Some releases dedicated to individual stories will also be released as their own box sets.
10) Will the unfinished and untransmitted
"Shada" be included?
Yes.
10a) Will the TV movie with Paul McGann be included?
Fuck no.
11) How much will releases cost?
I'm sorry, you must have me confused with a capitalist.
11a) How do I obtain one?
Just holler.
11b) When will they be available?
First one in the next few months. Watch this space for availability, and I'll announce releases in various places.
12) Will these be limited edition? If so, how limited?
No record will be released in an edition smaller than 20 copies. I anticipate doing some duping on demand, but if all else fails and I'm not distributing a release as originally created, there will always be an lossless digital option with art files included, so you can print and copy your own physical artifact.
13) What's your favorite Doctor Who serial?
"Ghost Light", written by Marc Platt (7Q). The Doctor and Ace investigate a haunted house in Victorian England, and any more would spoil it. Platt's script is incredibly dense - partly by design, partly because they had to trim four episodes to three - with dozens of literary allusions per minute. It's dark, surreal, terribly witty, and has some of the most beautiful lines that the show has ever delivered. "Now the wild world is lost in a desert of smoke and straight lines."
14) What's your least favorite classic Doctor Who serial?
"Time-Flight" (6C). Someone hijacks the Concorde and transports it to prehistoric earth. It's even worse than it sounds.
14a) How will you approach making the record dedicated to that serial?
Rueing the day I came up with this idea.
15) Is the
War Chief the
Master?
Obviously.
16) Is the Dream Lord the Valeyard?
Duh.
17) Who's the best Doctor?
Like them all. Yes, including Colin Baker. I'm slightly partial to Patrick Troughton, Tom Baker, and Sylvester McCoy. As far as New Who goes, Matt Smith has been awesome.
17a) Who's the best Master?
Seriously? Roger Delgado, although when Anthony Ainley was finally given free reign on the role, he fucking delivered.
17b)
Romana I or Romana II?
Don't make me choose.
17c) Who's the best
Borusa?
John Arnatt ("The Invasion of Time"), easy.
18) Will Verity perform live?
Yep.
